Known as the ‘coca-cola’ route, the Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro being the oldest, most well established route. It starts in tropical rainforest, where you may see blue monkeys, passes through moorland and alpine desert before reaching the summit. This route is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and it’s the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations. The minimum days required for this route is five, although the probability of successfully reaching the top in that time period is quite low. Spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain is highly recommended when climbing Klimanjaro using the Marangu route.

Take the Marangu route up Mount Kilimanjaro and witness the bright sunrise on Gillman’s Point before summitting Uhuru Peak. The Marangu route is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. It is the oldest and the most well-established route on the Kilimanjaro, sometimes referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route. This is the only route that offers sleeping huts in dormitory-style. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls, basic wash rooms and toilets. The short time frame of the route makes altitude acclimatization fairly difficult. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast and is less scenic than other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path. It is also the most crowded route for that reason.

Lemosho Route is considered one of the easiest routes on Kilimanjaro as the longer itinerary allows for better acclimatization. However, hikers will still need to ascend the Barranco Wall and climb steeply on summit night. Lemosho route is around 70 kms or 42 miles whether you opt for the 7 or 8 day version. It joins up with the Machame Route between Shira and Barranco so the terrain is very similar.
