A trekking safari along the Lemosho Route, offering climbers a combination of the best panoramic views of the mountain, low traffic and a high summit success rate on a journey to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Begin by making your way through the rainforest in the foothills before crossing the Shira Plateau and heading over its ridge on a beautiful secluded trail before joining the regular path that leads up to Lava Tower. Reach various sites along the way to Barafu Camp before making your way up to Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak. A truly magical route, rewarding you with beautiful scenic views on your journey to the top of the ‘Roof of Africa’.

Day 1: Moshi - Londorossi Gate - Mti Mkubwa
Make your way from Moshi to the Londorossi Gate for the start of your climb. Head to the Lemosho trailhead and begin your hike through the rain forest on a winding trail up to Mti Mkubwa where you will spend the evening.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa - Shira 1 Camp
Continue on the trail that will take you out of the rain forest and in to the grasslands filled with heather and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. Make your way up the lush rolling hills, crossing several streams before reaching the Shira Ridge. Make your way down to Shira 1 Camp where you will spend the night, enjoying your first views of Kibo Peak.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp - Moir Hut
Explore the Shira Plateau for the day as you make your way east, across the moorland meadow towards Shira 2 Camp. Later you will split off from the main trail and head towards Moir Hut, a campsite on the base of the Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on the Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity.

Day 4: Moir Hut - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp
Initially you will head towards the east as you make your way up a steep ridge before turning towards the south as you hike up to the Lava Tower, a 300ft volcanic rock formation. You will then descend down to Barranco Camp through a beautiful Senecio Forest. End the day at a similar altitude that you started at after making your way higher up the mountain, aiding in your acclimatization.

Day 5: Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp
Begin the day by descending into a ravine at the base of the Great Barranco Wall before climbing a non-technical but steep 900ft cliff. After the Barranco Wall you will cross a series of hills and valleys before dropping down into the Karanga Valley. One more steep climb leads you to Karanga Camp where you will spend the evening.

Day 6 : Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp
Leave Karanga in the morning and make your way towards the Mweka Trail. Continue up a rocky section, completing the southern circuit, offering stunning views of the summit. Reach Barafu Camp for a chance to rest and have an early dinner as you prepare for your summit day while enjoying views of the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Day 7: Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak Summit - Mweka Camp
A midnight wake up for your push to the summit. This is the most challenging portion of the hike as you ascend the slopes in the the cold winds, surrounded by darkness. Stop for short breaks to catch your breath as you make your way to Stella Point at 18,900ft where you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you have ever seen. Complete the final stretch and finally arrive at the summit, having made it to the top of this iconic mountain. Enjoy the views from the ‘roof of Africa’ and take some photos before heading back down to Mweka Hut with an en-route stop at Barafu Camp for lunch. Enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well deserved sleep.

Day 8: Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate - Moshi
Your last day of the trek sees you making your way to Mweka Gate to collect your summit certificates. Head to Mweka Village from the gate where you will meet your transfer vehicle that will take you to the hotel in Moshi.
